September is here… are you and your marketing team ready?

As the summer slowly winds down and we try desperately to get as much vitamin D in as possible, sooner or later our attention turns to the impending season change.

For those of you with kids, that is the best news you’ve heard in a long time. For others entering high school for the first time, it’s the headline to a horror movie (write down your locker combo!). Everyone else has been conditioned to view September as the season of new beginnings.

Throughout our lives, we’ve been looking to September as the start of a new school year. For some of us, 15 years or more of our life has been marked with this transition. New Years Eve celebrations try to get us excited for the “New Year” – implying that something is actually changing – instituting all of our new resolutions. Don’t you think that if we celebrated the new year on September 1st, we would accomplish a lot more of those goals?

Think about it, in January there’s no real sustained detachment from work. We’ve had some time off for Christmas break, but for some of us with large families, lots of travel, and intricate traditions, Christmas can become more work than play!

On the other hand, throughout July and August friends, families, coworkers and clients are using the majority of their vacation time to escape somewhere to enjoy the summer. As I’m reminded of the last day of school and the celebrations that took place, I realize we’ve been conditioned to relax throughout the summer. It’s the same for the business world too, as work begins to slow down a little bit as people leave their jobs early for the lake or to grab a good spot on the new patio downtown and marketing strategy gets put on the back burner.

In the summer, we allow our minds time to rest, and, more importantly, to dream about the future. We take time, even if it’s not conscious, to think about our new goals for the fall and what we want to accomplish. It could be some extra renovations on the house, writing a blog post once a month, putting your boots to the ground and launching that new business venture, amping up your marketing strategy, or even spending more time with a loved one.

When September inevitably arrives, everyone returns to work after their summer vacation, rested, refreshed and – if I can use a reference from my faux punk rock past – ready to throw down.
So why not start your ‘next year’ now? Take some time to think what you want out of your life and business. Do you want to increase your revenue? How are you, and your marketing team, going to do that? We use SMART goals to make our dreams reality. To make it easier for you, we have created a free SMART Goals planning template that you can use to get your new year off to a great start!
